1966: Tom Mutz purchased Iron Fireman in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. This is the first Unique Indoor Comfort company which continued to operate under it’s orignal name of Iron Fireman. Soon thereafter, Tom started a business in his former hometown of Indianapolis with a longtime partner.
1967: Johnson Heating and Air Conditioning in Libertyville, Illinois was purchased. Tom develops a vision of owning an interest in a number of heating and air conditioning companies using the same name and same business philosophy, and as result changed the name of this company to Unique Indoor Comfort.
1967 to 1972: Tom Mutz and other long time associates started new companies in Chicago, Indianapolis, and St. Louis, MO. They also purchased Moncrief, an existing previously Mutz owned company in Atlanta, GA.
1972 to 1992: Tom Mutz and his associates purchase or start other businesses in the Chicago area, downstate Illinois, northern Indiana, Indianapolis area, Cincinnati, Dallas, TX, Lexington, KY, and Philadelphia, PA. The Unique Indoor Comfort management team also founds UNICO, a manufacturer of high velocity air conditioners now based in St. Louis, MO.
1992: Tom Mutz dies in a hotel fire in Indianapolis, Indiana while visiting a Unique Indoor Comfort company located there. The Unique Indoor Comfort name and management company is purchased by entities lead by his son, Frank M. Mutz, II. Tom Mutz’s ownership in the individual companies was sold to their other owners in those companies pursuant to shareholder agreement buy-sell provisions.
1992 to present: Unique Indoor Comfort, the management/non-operating part of Unique Indoor Comfort turns into more of a consulting company, with an association of companies sharing a similar culture. They act as a conduit of ideas and provide advice in accounting, financial analysis, business operations, installations, service and service agreements.
Today: The nation’s HVAC landscape is full of individuals and companies that are better for their affiliation with Unique Indoor Comfort. The Unique Indoor Comfort brand is currently used in Atlanta, Chicago (3 companies), Indianapolis, Boston, and Philadelphia.
